SC Band Directors Association – Competitive Performance Assessment
It is with immense pride and heartfelt congratulations that I extend my sincerest commendations to the members of the Bethune-Bowman Middle/High Band Program and the Orangeburg Consolidated School District (OCSD) Middle School Honor Band for their outstanding achievement at the prestigious South Carolina Band Directors Association - Competitive Performance Assessment. The students in this exceptional ensemble represent the very best of our district's middle school talent, having dedicated themselves to an arduous yet rewarding journey toward excellence in music performance.
The road to this remarkable achievement began in December at Bethune-Bowman Middle/High School, where the rigorous audition process set the stage for their future success. Each student underwent a comprehensive evaluation that tested their musical prowess through a solo performance, mastery of scales, and sight-reading abilities. This demanding audition process was the first step in securing a place within the OCSD Honor Band.
Following the auditions, the talented students participated in the OCSD Honor Band Clinic, hosted at Claflin University. This two-day intensive clinic served as an immersive educational experience, where students honed their skills under the expert guidance of accomplished music educators. The clinic culminated in a spectacular concert that showcased their dedication, discipline, and artistry.
Today, we celebrate the well-deserved recognition that these exceptional students have brought to both our district and Bethune-Bowman, as they return home from the Competitive Performance Assessment with the highest honor: Superior with Distinction. This prestigious accolade signifies their flawless performance, as they earned straight "Superior" ratings both on stage and in the challenging sight-reading segment. Their success stands as a testament to their hard work, perseverance, and the high standards of excellence fostered within our school and school district.
This extraordinary accomplishment not only highlights the remarkable talent of our young musicians but also underscores the vitality and importance of the performing arts in Orangeburg County. The achievement of the OCSD Middle School Honor Band is a shining example of what can be accomplished when students are provided with the resources, guidance, and opportunities to grow and excel. It is a proud day for our community, and we look forward to the continued success and growth of our students in the arts.
Once again, congratulations to the members of the OCSD Middle School Honor Band, our Bethune-Bowman Students (Dilyn Berry, Selena Reaves, Kadir Lary, Jaden Williams, and I'mani Argo), their dedicated instructors (Herman Marsh, Charles Outen, Brittany Jones, Kendrea Hodges, James Stroman, and John Moorer II), and all those who have supported them along the way. A special thanks goes to Ms. Julia Rickenbacker for her great support of our band program and for stepping in as a chaperone. This achievement will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for future generations of young musicians in Orangeburg County and at Bethune-Bowman.

Two-Day Honor Band Clinic
The two-day Honor Band Clinic held at Claflin University was an exceptional and enriching experience for all the students involved. This prestigious event brought together talented musicians from across the Orangeburg County School District (OCSD), who were selected through a competitive audition process. These students, representing a wide range of schools in the district, came together with a shared passion for music, eager to participate in this challenging and rewarding opportunity.
We are especially proud of our seven students who made the Honor Band (Selena Reeves Clarinet, Dilyn Berry Clarinet, Chyanne Butler Trumpet, Jayden Williams Trumpet, Taylor Fairy Baritone/Euphonium, I'Mani Argo Percussion, Kadir Lary Percussion), as well as the five students who participated in the Honor Band Clinic (I'Mani Argo, Kadir Lary, Jayden Williams, Dilyn Berry, and Selena Reeves). These students demonstrated outstanding musical talent and dedication, earning their place through hard work and commitment to their craft. Their participation in this clinic reflects their passion for music and their desire to grow as musicians.
The clinic itself was both rigorous and fun, offering an intensive and well-structured schedule that balanced challenging rehearsals with moments of camaraderie and enjoyment. Students were pushed to their musical limits as they worked with highly skilled conductors and faculty, refining their technique, musicality, and ensemble skills. The demanding schedule encouraged students to give their best, learning to collaborate with their peers and improving their craft through focused, high-level instruction.
Beyond the challenging rehearsals, the clinic also provided an environment where students could forge lasting friendships, learn from one another, and experience the joy of playing in an elite ensemble. The sense of community was palpable, as everyone worked toward the common goal of delivering a memorable performance.
The culmination of the clinic was a spectacular concert at Claflin University, which showcased the hard work and dedication of the students. The concert was a celebration of the students' growth over the two days, and it was evident in the outstanding level of musicianship displayed on stage. Family, friends, and community members were treated to a performance that was both inspiring and a testament to the talent and perseverance of the students.
Overall, the Honor Band Clinic was an unforgettable experience for all participants. It was not only an opportunity for students to challenge themselves musically but also a chance to connect with other young musicians from across the district. The event highlighted the importance of hard work, collaboration, and the joy that music can bring into one’s life. We are incredibly proud of our students and their achievements, and we look forward to their continued success in music.
